Shocking: Hungarian woman tries to flush newborn baby down the toilet
A woman tried to flush her newborn baby down the toilet in the town of Kiskunfélegyháza, Bács-Kiskun County, on Saturday. The 33-year-old woman, who has mental health and alcohol problems, previously denied being pregnant, but that night she became ill, had contractions and began bleeding heavily. The baby was taken out of the toilet by paramedics, but it showed no signs of life. Police are investigating manslaughter.
A pregnancy kept in secret
The young woman was living in the home of her acquaintances. The owner of the house, István Szabó, took her as his own daughter. The man’s carer also lived in the house, and although they suspected that she was pregnant, she denied it all along. At 11 pm on Saturday night, however, she fell ill, had contractions and began bleeding heavily, so she ran to the bathroom, Index.hu writes.
At first, the caretaker did not see what the young woman was up to in the bathroom. She only saw that she had her pants pulled down and blood was covering both the woman and the bathtub.
Not a rag but a baby
The caretaker immediately called the ambulance when she saw the scene. As she returned to the bathroom, she spotted the young woman trying to flush something down the toilet. At first, she thought it was just a rag but then she realised that it was a newborn baby.
“I was in shock. I shouted to Pista (István Szabó – ed.) to come because there was a baby in the toilet,” told the carer told RTL Híradó. She said that the baby was seemingly alive at that time.
Investigation
When asked whether she took the newborn out of the toilet, the caretaker began sobbing and shook her head. By the time the shock had worn off, the ambulance arrived. The baby was eventually taken out of the toilet by the paramedics, but it showed no signs of life.
The police are investigating under the suspicion of manslaughter and are still trying to put together the pieces of the tragic event. The young woman has not been taken into custody. The police are also investigating with the help of experts whether the newborn would have had a chance for survival.
